certificate - why is so important

Updated: August 8, 2022 12:06

Secure Socket Layer / Transport Layer Security is a security protocol. It uses encrypted data for communication between two computers. In most cases, it refers to hosting server where is website and visitor device, where is browser. It can also be a connection between email server and email client. When you see on URL of website https:// instead just http://, it means that site has security SSL certificate.

https vs http

This is very important for every website! If there is no SSL certificate, most browsers near the URL will put attention "Not secure". It gives greater user trust. SSL encrypts data against cyber-attacks, like phishing. Also, SSL is SEO ranking factor, so it means, websites with https:// will be higher on SERP. Mostly web-hosting companies offers SSL certificates to their clients.

Security SSL certificate makes sensitive information more secure. So credit card numbers, social security numbers, and login credentials are transmitted more securely.

So advantages of using SSL certificate are:

  • Gives more confidence to visitors, users and buyers;
  • More security to all parts of the website;
  • It boosts Search Engine Optimization ranking;

There are two disadvantages to using SSL:

  • It could be tricky to implement it;
  • Websites are a bit slower, so it usually needs a powerful hosting packages;

But, having SSL/TLC certificate is not any more matter of choice. Every website must have this certificate if its owner wants to be taken seriously.

Because SSL/TLC is a certificate, it may contain this information:

  • Site domain on which is it installed;
  • Validity period of certificate;
  • Owner name;
  • State, city of company registration;
  • Certification Authority Information;
  • SSL number; ...

There are three types of security SSL certificate:

Types of SSL certificates

  1. Domain Validated (DV SSL) Certificates. Intended for personal websites.
  2. Organization Validated (OV SSL) Certificates: Intended for small business websites.
  3. Extended Validation (EV SSL) Certificates. Intended for large websites with ecommerce. URL bar on browser gets green color.
